Mare-Rouge MARE-ROUGE is a small village nortwest of Port-au-prince, Haiti located about 820 miles from Miami. It is estimated that about 19,000 people live in the village. Mare-rougians are proud of their village and mostly everyone knows each other by name. Mare-Rouge is known for it's unexplained red soil and it's close proximity to Moles-St- Nicolas (Mòlsennikola or Omòl). In the morning of December 6, 1492, Christopher Columbus called the area "Maravillosa" meaning Wonderful. The district of Môle St. Nicolas includes Jean Rabel, Bombardopolis, Baie de Henne and other suburbs such as Mare-Rouge. Most residents are either farmers, sheep, cow, goat breeder or merchants were they sell their crops in the local flea market call "Marche Mare-Rouge". The main crop are corn, green plaintans and beans. There is no power in the village and clean water is very scarce. Mare-rougians are caring, loving, strong, hardworking and motivated people. Today, there is a large number of people from that village and the surrounding area like Dame, Beauvoi, cotes-de-fer, Nan supran, just to name a few, that live in the US. Many of these Haitian have decided to help those that they left behind and started many projects to help that community.
